Integrated Watershed Management
The total coverage of this program includes nine blocks in four districts of Jharkhand State. IWM was started in Dhanbad, Koderma, Bokaro, and Hazaribagh Districts through the support of the Jharkhand State government and NABARD.
The Programs in Koderma, Bokaro & Dhanbad are funded by DOLR (Department of Land Resources) & PMKSY (PradhanMantri Krishi Sichai Yojana). While in Hazaribagh it is funded by the Rural Infrastructure Development Fund of NABARD.
Committee Formation:
- A village-level committee called ‘Krishi Sthayee Samiti’ has been formed at Hazaribagh.
- At Koderma, Bokaro & Dhanbad. Districts ‘Anu Jal Channan Samiti’(Micro Watershed Committee) has been formed.
Activities:
- Through these committees, training on better use of land, soil conservation, and groundwater recharge structure building is given to the farmers.
- JJK developed wastelands in an integrated manner based on village micro watershed plans.
- This plan involved the participation of local people following their needs
- By using the technology under upland treatment, JJK has constructed series of Trench-cum-bund (TCB) and Water Absorption Trench (WAT) through the ridge to valley approach on a saturation basis through which, fast-flowing runoff water has been collected and converted wasteland into agricultural land.
- Similarly, through the water harvesting structure, excess runoff water has been collected in the earthen check dam or pond.
Output:
- By this initiative, JJK has restored the ecological balance by harnessing, conserving, and developing degraded natural resources
- The natural resources management program has been able to convert 21,711.98 hectares of degraded wasteland into productive land.
- Now the ponds are being used for the production of fish and the bund of the pond is used for vegetable cultivation.
